Copthorne King’s Hotel Singapore: Engineering Excellence for a Sustainable Future

Copthorne King’s Hotel Singapore continues to make a positive impact through sustainability efforts and responsible operations across the hotel. From energy-saving initiatives to waste reduction measures, the team is committed to doing its part for the environment and the community. Through strategic implementation of advanced systems and smart technologies, the hotel demonstrates that environmental responsibility and operational excellence go hand in hand.

The hotel faced challenges in tracking and monitoring energy consumption across its wide variety of facilities, with unknown operating hours for ACMV (air conditioning and mechanical ventilation) equipment creating inefficiencies.

The solution: an Energy Management Monitoring System that enables remote control of HVAC systems, monitors and manages energy usage effectively, provides real-time status of HVAC operating systems, and allows pre-scheduling of HVAC equipment according to operational needs. Mobile devices enable remote HVAC control and receive alert SMS notifications, significantly improving productivity whilst reducing energy waste.

Water Conservation: 60% Reduction in Daily Usage

Previous water consumption patterns revealed high usage, with estimated per-person use of 172.5 litres: showers at 16 litres per minute, flushing tanks at 9.5 litres per single flush, and basin taps at 6 litres per minute.

Water-efficient fixtures now prevent waste in guest rooms through dual flushing cistern tanks with 3.9-litre capacity (full flush at 3.9 litres per minute, reduced flush at 2.9 litres), shower systems at 6.5 litres per minute, and hand basin taps at 3.2 litres per minute. The result: overall estimated water use of 72.1 litres, representing 60% water savings from daily usage by guests. Save water, save energy, save cost.

Food Digester System: Moving Towards Zero Waste

To reduce daily general waste, Copthorne King’s Hotel Singapore implemented a food digester system. The system processes rice, noodles, fruits, vegetables, and raw and cooked meat with bones and seafood. Food waste mixed with microbes breaks down within 24 hours and turns into liquid.

The economical benefits are substantial: reduction in waste disposal fees and haulage fees, a fully automated system reducing manpower requirements, food waste no longer stored on site (reducing pest control costs), increased organisational savings, reduction in use of bin bags, and low operation costs.

Smart Digital Lock and Control System

The hotel can now remotely access all balcony doors to lock or unlock via software system and monitor lock status. This implementation saves manpower hours and reduces travel and energy usage, significantly improving productivity.

The challenge was significant: room FCUs (fan coil units) running at full blast even in unoccupied rooms, lights left on in empty rooms, and existing keycard systems failing as guests often left cards in holders, keeping air conditioning and lights on full blast whilst out of rooms. This resulted in substantial energy waste.

The solution eliminates the traditional keycard system. The room energy system operates via sensors and RFID locks, with all room power supply and FCU operation automated to function only when guests are present. When guests leave, the room FCU temperature automatically adjusts to 25°C and room lights turn off automatically. The benefits: guest room energy savings and better efficiency.

Ongoing Commitment

These initiatives reflect Copthorne King’s Hotel Singapore’s commitment to sustainability, practical innovation and creating a more responsible stay experience for guests and colleagues. Key measures include the use of an Energy Management Monitoring System, guest room energy-saving controls, smart digital locks and water-saving measures to reduce consumption and minimise waste. In support of responsible food practices, the hotel has also implemented a food digester system to manage food waste more effectively and reduce environmental impact.

Copthorne King’s Hotel Singapore’s engineering-led sustainability initiatives demonstrate measurable environmental progress whilst enhancing operational efficiency and maintaining the quality service guests expect.
